Introduction to Scotch Whisky Kit

This kit is designed to accompany the tasting session in the Introduction to Scotch Whisky Course.

Springbank 10yr Single Malt (S40)

Springbank is the only distillery in Scotland to perform ALL of the production processes on site. From the selection of the barley to malting to distillation to bottling after dozens of years, it's all done here.

NOTES

Campbeltown was once the Whisky producing capital of the world. But now only three distilleries are active in the town.

Chivas Regal 18 Gold Signature (S43)

Created by Master Blender Colin Scott including over 20 single malts from around Scotland. Aroma of dried fruits, melted butter and dark chocolate. From the oldest continuously operating Highland distillery.

NOTES

Created in 1997, Chivas 18 is a firm favorite among many whisky aficionados. Its complex and wide-ranging flavor profile has made it an iconic whisky blend, featuring no less than 85 flavor notes.

Velvety and luxurious on the palate, where further notes of dark chocolate are accentuated by floral tones and a mild, sweet smokiness. Warm and elegant finish, punctuated by both honey and oak. Remarkable flavours of sweet butterscotch, dark chocolate, zesty orange and much more are ready for you to discover with every sip of Chivas 18.

Tamdhu 12 yr (S44)

From Speyside and matured in ex-sherry casks for 12 years, this drink holds aromas of cinnamon rolls, orange candy, fresh oak, raisins & traces of mint. EWA Certificate in Scotch Whisky Kit as an example of Sherry cask maturation

NOTES

The palate offers notes of banana, raspberry jam, malty biscuits & toasted oak, with cinnamon and dried fruit flavors that linger in the finish.

Silky texture that coats the mouth with banana, berry jam, malt biscuit and classic sherry oak depth.

Pleasantly long and balanced with ground spice, dried fruit and soft Scottish tablet – finally unveiling the merest wisp of peat smoke.

Ballantines Finest Blended Scotch Whisky (S45)

The biggest seller of Scotch in Europe and number 2 in the world.

NOTES

Shackleton Blended Malt Whisky (S46)

The brand is most famous for being the whisky of choice of Sir Ernest Shackleton to accompany his 1907 expedition to the South Pole. The 25 cases of Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt were made to order at a specific 47.3% abv strong enough to withstand freezing temperatures.

NOTES

In 2007 several bottles of Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt were found at Shackleton’s Antarctic base camp, and analysis found the whisky had been matured in American oak Sherry casks, and produced using Orkney peat in the malting process.

Auchentoshan American Oak (S47)

Triple distilled and matured solely in American bourbon casks. The result: a Lowland Single Malt Whisky with the sweet aromas of vanilla and coconut – along with the signature smooth, delicate, Auchentoshan taste.

NOTES

Arran 10 yr (S48)

Chosen as a lovely example of a Bourbon barrel aged whisky. First released in 2006, this 10-year whisky is the flagship single malt from Arran located on the namesake island off the southwest coast of the mainland.

NOTES

From Arran Island, with remarkable water from Loch na Davie.

The initial rush of rich vanilla sweetness gives way to a touch of cinnamon which adds a spicy edge to the soft and sweet texture. The classic Arran citrus notes have rounded with age and reveal new depths of character against a background of sweet oak.

Aberlour 12 yr (S49)

Aberlour Single Malt was born in the Speyside village of Aberlour, made with local spring water from the Ben Rinnes and barley now locally sourced from the fields of our distillery. Aberlour specialises in double cask maturation, with whiskies matured in Oloroso sherry and American oak casks that are then combined to impart depth, complexity and character.

NOTES

The distillery uses four pot stills in its double distillation process to produce its new make spirit. With the pear shape, the pot and the conical neck have the classic design. With no constriction or reflux bowls in the neck and the lyne arm facing downwards you would expect a very strong and intense distillery character which you don't get. So this leads to how fast Aberlour distills its spirits, the gentle sweet and calm nature of this 12 shows what a very slow distillation process will create.
